Dia de Independencia

Hello friends and family! You may or may not know, but I am terrible at keeping up with my blog. I am so sorry for those of you that await my posts! If you haven't noticed my lack of blogging, great! :)

This blog should have been written back in September.. so please close your eyes and imagine it is September 15, 2012.

September 15 is el Dia de Independencia, or Independence Day, here in Honduras.
Like those in the States, Hondurans take great pride in their country, especially in their Independence Day, making it a day of great celebration.

In Honduran schools, the month of September is devoted to learning Honduran facts and parts of history important to their independence, and of course the practicing of the Marches.
On the Friday and Saturday of Independence Day, the schools throughout La Ceiba join in a parade that marches through the city honoring their counrty.

If you are a teacher in the U.S. or have any background in the U.S. school systems, hold onto your hats, because this might blow your mind.
The school, where I've been teaching, cancels 3 whole days of school (keep in mind a normal day of school is only 4 hours long) just to practice "marching" for the Independence Day parade. As annoyed as any teacher from the states would be from losing so much class time, it was a really fun experience, and the kids were so awesome! They got to sign the Honduran National Anthem for all the people in the crowd. Everyone loved it.

Here are some photos to give you an idea of what it looked like :)

Rode (she teaches the younger group of Deaf at the school) and I leading the marches.

Lucila! All the kids take these marches very seriously and try their hardest not to smile or do anything funny

Cinthia, Vivian, and Eduin; so serious!

Still saluting... we had a few technology mishaps with the CD... so we saluted the flag for a while :)
