Special Moments

Honduran soccer game with Joy and Fanny! The 3 of us live in a house together, Fanny is a 21 yr old Deaf Honduran, it's been a blast with these 2 as roomies!!

This is what my classroom looked like 3 days before school started...
It was quite a job to straighten up! Honduras isn't exactly the most efficient country.

The first and second days of school only 6 kids came to school, but Valentine's Day everyone had shown up :)

Happy Valentine's Day from students at Emilia D'Cuire!

Vocabulary Practice

Last Sunday, Nancy (one of our beautiful Deaf leaders) found a new deaf girl and brought her to church. Her name is Blanca Luz (White Light in Spanish). She is the sweetest little thing you ever saw. She was very timid and showed very little emotion throughout the service (of course who wouldn't be sitting in a room full of Americans flinging their hands around like crazy people). As far as we could see she had zero language.

After church we decided we should visit Blanca's family to see if there would be anyway she could start coming to school, little did we know she lived up a mountain turning our short visit into an intense hike in the pouring rain. This visit quickly turned into one of my favorite memories so far. Through the slipping and sliding and falling, we were introduced to Blanca Luz's very poor family. With the help of donations from friends of SofL, we were able to convince Blanca's mom to allow her to come to school the very next day! Blanca has been at school every day since last Sunday. Each day she becomes more and more comfortable and her solemn blank face has turned into the most beautiful smile that greets us each morning at school. Blanca's dad informed us that no one has ever thought she would amount to anything but a burden to her family. The first time he held her he knew she would be something special, and for the first time he is not alone in knowing that God has great plans for this precious child! Please pray for Blanca and her family as she grows in language and love.

Blanca learning her name sign :)
Joy sat by her during church and helped her practice a few signs. The first sign she learned was the sign for Jesus. Such a precious moment.
